Bondage sex is one of those things that some people love, some aren’t interested in, and others would secretly love to try but just don’t know where to start.

Get “strapped in” and ready to go.

A Quick Primer on Bondage Sex Positions for Couples

Bondage is a great way to spice up the bedroom and explore your partner in new and interesting ways, but it also comes with a bit of responsibility due to restraints and the nature of some of the techniques.

The pros out there know all about this, but if you’re brand-new, there are a few rules you need to keep in mind to keep everything fun and exciting.

  • Communicate: Bondage comes in all kinds of forms and intensities. Communicate with your partner to see what they’re comfortable with before you start bringing random things into the bedroom.
  • Safe Words: While you’re communicating, come up with a vocal safe word to signal you need a pause and something’s genuinely not enjoyable. Since you might have something covering your mouth, a non-vocal safe action is also a good idea. This way, your partner knows something is wrong, and it’s not part of the fun.
  • Know Your Limits: There are bondage options that anyone can do, and it’s very accessible. However, some things can get pretty physical. Know what your body can handle before you jump headfirst into being a contortionist.

The Best Bondage Positions

Now that we got the primer out of the way, let’s dive into our favorite bondage positions.

1: Cuffed to the Bed Posts

We’re going to start this off with a really simple one that you’ve probably seen in pop culture. It’s one of the simplest handcuff sex positions you do, and all you need are 2 sets of handcuffs and a bed with bars or posts at the head of it.

When we say it’s simple, we mean it. Using the handcuffs, restrain each of your partner’s hands to the bed posts.

The lack of control for the restrained partner and the heightened level of control for the unrestrained partner are new sensations that are simple but add a lot to the experience.

You can also mix this up a bit since it’s not exactly a position in and of itself. You can use it to give one partner full control of sex toys, one-way oral or the classic 69 but with restraints, or full-on riding.

The main allure here is that one person loses control of the experience and the other gains it. Get creative and maybe consider using it to flip-flop your usual paradigm by giving the more submissive partner full control.

2: Tied or Cuffed Oral

This is another simple one you’ve probably seen alluded to in pop culture, and it can be done with handcuffs, or it can be a tied-up sex position.

Get your restraining device of choice (handcuffs, rope, tying fabric, etc.), and tie your partner’s hands to their back. You can also restrain their ankles to each other for a bit of added spice.

On their knees, oral is the primary option, and you can get creative with that. You can even touch it up a bit with a blindfold.

There’s only one issue with this, and it’s primarily an issue for beginners. With your partner’s hands and possibly even their feet restrained behind them, and the nature of oral making speech difficult, you must take responsibility for their safety. Make sure you’re giving them plenty of time to breathe, opportunities to speak, etc.

This often works as a part of the play. You have to stop the actual stimulation frequently, but you can work in dirty talk and other forms of play to provide those opportunities without ruining the mood.

3: The Cage

We’re going to step away from the beginner-friendly options for a moment and touch on a position that requires a bit more flexibility and physicality. We’ll call it the cage.

Essentially, the receiving partner has their hands handcuffed behind their back, and their legs are bent back until their feet can be tucked in behind their wrists. This arches their torso outward. Then, the penetrating partner slides in behind them. The restrained partner’s arms and legs form a “cage,” and the rest is essentially a modified form of doggy style.

4: The Starfish

Back to something relatively simple and accessible: we have the starfish. If you really want to take control, this is one of the best bondage positions to do so with. It’s a step above the first position we listed.

Start by handcuffing your partner’s hands to the bed posts, and then go a step further by handcuffing their feet to the foot of the bed. Voila. They look like a starfish.

The point of this is to provide an extreme sense of exposure and restraint. The restrained partner can’t really do anything, they’re laid out with all of their personal bits in plain view, and you can more or less do whatever you want (In theory, of course. You’re still abiding by any limits you talked about beforehand).

This position makes it difficult to do more penetration than simple missionary, but it’s the ultimate playtime position. You can enjoy using a variety of toys on your partner, experiment with gags and blindfolds, explore their body, and more.

5: Frog-Tie

This is a tied-up sex position that requires just a little more skill, but it’s one both of you are going to love. You’ll need some silk bondage ties or rope for this one, but we highly recommend the silk ties. They’re gentler and don’t feel scratchy.

To do it, the person being penetrated is going to have three ties done. Bend the receiver’s knees until their heels touch their butt, and then use one tie for each leg to wrap around the thigh and tie the ankle to the thigh for each leg. The third tie is more of a weave. The receiver will put their hands behind their back, and you weave the silk tie from around the front of their torso, through their arms behind their back, and tie their wrists to secure their hands behind their back.

When you’re done, they’ll be restrained with their hands firmly behind their back and their legs locked in a kneeled position.

You can use this as an upgraded version of the handcuffed oral position we mentioned and then easily transfer it into a restrained missionary position by gently guiding them onto their back. Remember, they’re restrained. So, take some caution when getting them into position.

With their legs tied and spread open, this is a great deep-penetration position.

6: Bottoms Up

Bottoms up is a simple spin on classic doggy style, but it gives a sense of power to the penetrator and submissiveness to the receiver.

You can use a spreader bar, but if your partner spreads easily without it, you can get by with handcuffs or silk ties.

Essentially, you restrain the receiver’s right wrist to their right ankle and their left wrist to their left ankle. This causes their butt to naturally arch up for doggy style since they can’t brace their upper body with their arms, and it makes it a lot easier to gain access. If you use a spreader bar, it keeps the ankles separated by a few feet to really open everything up and prevent accidentally closing with muscle spasms or enjoyment.

7: Over the Pit

Time to wrap things up with a standing position for the sub. Over the pit is a full-restraint sex position that is flexible, doesn’t require a lot of physicality, and provides a sexy view for the dom while the sub is fully submitted.

However, it requires a bit more materials.

First, you’ll need something overhead that’s at least taller than your partner when they stretch their hands all the way into the air. Then, you’ll need some bondage ties and a spreader bar.

Here’s how to set it up. We’ll assume you have a low rafter or a pull-up bar to do the tying with.

  1. Tie your partner’s hands together at the wrists.
  2. Use another tie to tie the restrained wrists to the overhead support.
  3. Tie your partner’s ankles to each end of the spreader bar.

When you’re done, the sub will have their hand-tied straight up in the air, and their legs will be spread apart. You can use this for toy play, standing penetration, or performing oral on the sub.
